Hogwarts Locations in England

Visiting Hogwarts with your private guide is slightly more difficult than you may have imagined as it was filmed in a series of different locations, here are some you will be sure to recognize:

Durham Cathedral, used as the location for Hogwarts in Harry Potter.
Popular

Durham Cathedral

What films? Harry Potter and the sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: One of England's most loved, oldest, and grand cathedrals, and a UNESCO World Heritage site to boot, Durham was featured prominently in the first two films. The famous ancient cloisters are used as the setting for the scene where Harry casts a spell to release Hedwig the owl, meanwhile, you will get to visit Harry’s classroom in Hogwarts from the ‘transfiguration’ scene where Harry, Ron, and Hermione turn animals into water goblets.
Alnwick castle used as the location for Hogwarts school in Harry Potter.
Popular

Alnwick Castle

What films? Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Perhaps the most immediately recognizable sights for fans of the boy wizard, the majestic 700-year-old castle was used for external shots of Hogwarts students outside of the castle, and most famously was the setting for Madam Hooch’s flying lesson in the first film, and where Harry learned the rules of Quidditch.
Oxford University used for Harry Potter filming locations on your tour.
Popular

Oxford University - Bodleian Library

What films? Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005): Already worth visiting on its own as one of the oldest and grandest libraries in Europe, the Gothic architecture of Duke Humfrey’s Library inside Oxford’s Bodleian Library leant itself perfectly to be used as the Hogwarts Library in multiple films, while the medieval Divinity School inside the Bodleian with its engrossing ceiling patterns and imperious tall windows featured as the Hogwarts Infirmary in the first movie.

Harry Potter Tour Locations in Scotland

Scotland can not only be considered the spiritual home of Harry Potter as this is where J.K Rowling was living at the time when she wrote the novels but has also provided some of the most stunning scenery and locations for the movies:

Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh that inspired JK Rowling to write harry Potter.
Popular

Edinburgh Harry Potter Guided Tour

Return to the start of a phenomenon and the birthplace of Harry. The Elephant House cafe is celebrated as the spot where J.K began writing the tales that would enrapture generations. Meanwhile, the bustling city streets and gothic architecture of Edinborough provided plenty of inspiration for the (at the time) aspiring writer. See if you can spot any recognizable names from the series on the headstones in Greyfriars Kirkyard and visit George Heriot's School, the 17th-century building that is believed to have inspired Hogwarts.
Glenfinnan Viaduct in Scotland better known as Hogwarts Express on Harry Potter tour.

Known as the gateway to the Highlands, the glorious rolling hills, valleys, and mountains of Glencoe featured in several of the films, notably for landscape shots for the grounds of Hogwarts, & the Steall Falls at Glen Nevis provided the backdrop for the Triwizard Tournament in the “Goblet of Fire”.
